Aggreko wins bid for 100 MW power project in Republic of Benin
News Highlight
- Aggreko’s ADDGAS system is an add-on technology which substitutes a portion of diesel fuel with natural gas as an effective means of lowering overall costs.
Aggreko, a global provider of modular and mobile power solutions, said on Monday that it has won a one-year contract to supply 100 MW of ADDGAS-generated power in the Repubilc of Benin.
Aggreko’s ADDGAS system is an add-on technology, which substitutes a portion of diesel fuel with natural gas. The ADDGAS system provides an effective means of lowering overall costs resulting in significant savings over the lifecycle of a project. The potential cost savings for an ADDGAS system can be up to 23% over a standard diesel generator.
According to a statement by Aggreko, which is listed on the London Stock Exchange, it will support the Société Béninoise d'Energie Electrique (SBEE), Benin’s national power utility and system operator, to make significant savings over the duration of the contract. SBEE is working to improve electricity in the country of 10 million inhabitants with a rapidly expanding industrial sector. The World Bank projects that real GDP growth in the country is projected at 5.5 to 6% in 2016. GDP growth averaged 5.95% in the last four years, including 5% in 2015.
“We signed with Aggreko because Benin can count on its ability to mobilise within the contractual deadlines and on its experience as an operator” said, Laurent Tossou, Managing Director of SBEE. “Aggreko’s proposition considers Benin’s availability of gas, while also allowing production units to operate with diesel only. The additional production capacities will enable the Beninese government to fulfil a daily structural deficit ranging between 40 and 60 MW per day for more than a year.”
Another benefit of the ADDGAS system is fuel efficiency. Aggreko says ADDGAS can be retrofited on existing diesel generators on-site with minimal disruption of operations and with no impact on routine maintenance.
“We are delighted to be working once again alongside SBEE to bring reliable power to the people of Benin,” said Managing Director, Aggreko Africa, James Shepherd. “By delivering this fast-track power, we are helping to provide a more consistent and reliable energy supply to the people of Benin, while helping to support the economic growth in the country.”
Aggreko has previously worked with SBEE at various intervals over the last 12 years. With around 2.3 GW currently installed across 34 African countries, Aggreko is the largest supplier of modular, mobile power in Africa, according to the company, which is headquartered in Scotland. Expected to be mobilised by the end of the year, the project will create more local jobs.
