Dangote to increase cement production to 80 million metric tonnes

Dangote Cement Plc plans to increase its current production capacity of 40 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) to 80 MMTPA. President and Chief Executive of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote GCON, stated this at the official opening of its cement plant in Ndola, Zambia on Tuesday.

The biggest publicly quoted company in West Africa with a market capitalization of 3.076 trillion naira has operations in 14 African countries. Dangote Cement has a total production capacity of over 20 million metric tonnes from its Nigeria operations. Its recently opened a cement plant in Douala, Cameroon, has a capacity of 1.5 MMTPA, similar to the new Zambia plant.

Aliko Dangote said: “Our target is to expand installed cement capacity in Africa outside Nigeria to a total of 40 million metric tons per annum, with Nigeria having the same capacity.”

With fairer economic growth statistics and expanding government spending on infrastructure in Africa, demand for construction products has increased on the continent. Other African countries where Dangote Cement has production plants include Ethiopia, Congo, Senegal and South Africa. The company also plans to build another new plant in Zambia with similar capacity to the Ndola plant. In addition, Dangote Cement has plans to expand its operations in Tanzania later this year.
