The Queen’s Young Leaders Programme has selected two Nigerians among a group of 60 people across the Commonwealth to receive the prestigious Queen’s Young Leaders Award, according to a statement released on Wednesday.

The Nigerian winners are Bukola Bolarinwa, a 28-year-old from Lagos, who was chosen in recognition of her work on encouraging thousands of people to give blood; and 26-year-old Nasir Yammama from Abuja, who has been acknowledged for harnessing the power of simple, low-cost technologies to help local farmers produce more crops and increase their sales.

“We are delighted that these incredible young people have been selected as Queen’s Young Leaders, and wish our warmest congratulations to each and every one of them,” said Dr. Astrid Bonfield CBE, Chief Executive of the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust. “The work being undertaken by the latest cohort of Queen’s Young Leaders is addressing some of the most crucial issues facing the Commonwealth today.”

The Queen’s Young Leaders Award recognises and celebrates exceptional people aged 18-29 from across the Commonwealth, who are driving change in their communities and using their skills to transform lives. Winners of the Award will receive a unique package of training, mentoring and networking, including a one-week residential programme in the UK. They will receive their Award from The Queen at a ceremony in London next year.

“I believe the Queen's Young Leader Award will improve my leadership skills and help me to cement already established links with universities and colleges to develop a culture of voluntary and regular blood donation,” Ms. Bolarinwa said.

The Queen’s Young Leaders Programme was established in 2014 by the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust in partnership with Comic Relief, the Royal Commonwealth Society and the University of Cambridge’s Institute of Continuing Education, in recognition of the Queen’s lifetime of service to the Commonwealth. The programme selects 60 young people every year until 2018, when it will be terminated.
